The Secret Life of Bees

This is the most wonderful book! I read it last year and then again last month for my moms' book club. I had forgotten how much I loved it the first time! If you are a fan of To Kill a Mockingbird or Fried Green Tomatoes, then you need to get a copy of this book. Make that two copies - one to keep and one to share! The story takes place in South Carolina in 1964 and is about a young girl, Lily Owens, who runs away from a not-so-great home to find herself and some answers about her mother's mysterious life. On her journey she meets the "Calendar Sisters" - May, June, and August. The sisters take her in and teach her the art of beekeeping. But it's the bees who teach her about life and the answers that she has been hoping to find. Perfect for a hot summer afternoon with a cold glass of honey sweetened lemonade!

Note: This book is supposedly being made into a movie that will be released this fall - so read it now since you know the book is always better than the movie!
